COVID-19: Lyon President Aulas, sues French Ligue 1 for cancellation of league

Image
As other top leagues in Europe are joining the German Bundesliga to resume, France’s Ligue 1 being the only one of Europe’s top five major leagues to cancel its season because of the coronavirus crisis may be embroiled in litigation. President of Lyon’s Olympique Lyonnais club, Jean-Michel Aulas, who has been one of the most outspoken critics of the authority, has decided to seek justice. On Thursday, the 71-year-old officially asked the Council of State, France’s highest administrative court, to overrule Ligue 1’s decision to terminate the current campaign. “It was absurd to call the league off while other leagues reserved the right not to. Germany is already playing again, Spain will next week,” Aulas fumed at the hearing. “It’s the league which took the decision and can take the decision to resume… I’m shocked that we’re here debating whether we can play or not.” Aulas revealed that he has had talks with the European Clubs Association and that “the procedure proposed by UEFA is the

Mr. President is not in charge of this nation – Wole Soyinka reveals

By Nwafor Sunday President Muhammadu Buhari is not in charge of Nigeria, said Prof Wole Soyinka, Nobel laureate, on Thursday. Soyinka was reacting to the letter written to Buhari by the former military governor of Kaduna State, Col. Abubakar Dangiwa Umar(retd), wherein he advised Buhari to change his mode of appointments, noting that his skewed appointments into offices of the Federal Government, favouring some and frustrating others, would bring ruin and destruction to the country. However, this is not the first time Soyinka is condemning Buhari’s actions and administrative modus operandi, since Mr President assumed office in 2015. Recall that the literary giant, had on April 2, 2020, criticised President Buhari’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic, saying the president had been conspicuously absent as the virus gained a foothold across the country. More so, Soyinka, had on March 30, 2020, described movement restriction imposed on two states of the federation by President Muhammadu

The governor said such claim might be “partly right”. The governor was responding to a tweet by one Jibrin Ibrahim who picked holes in the COVID-19 numbers released by NCDC every evening. Ibrahim insinuated that state governors might be reducing the number of samples sent to NCDC so they can record low numbers and hasten return to normal activities. He made the demand on Thursday during an interview on  PlusTv Africa . The renowned writer, who reacted to an open letter written by  Umar Dangiwa, retired colonel and former military administrator of Kaduna, over skewed appointments in Buhari’s regime , called for decentralisation of the country. Soyinka said, “Umar hits the nail hard and got to the point factually without self-interest. I was appalled when I saw the letter and I said to myself why should I be surprised that such atrocities have been going on. “They said there is going to be an inquiry. I think it is a waste of time and energy. There will be some joggling here and there. The answer for me will always get back to decentralisation. “This kind of r

COVID-19: Lagos govt reveals what will happen in three weeks if cases keep increasing

Image
The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, has said the State will run out of bed spaces at isolation centres, if COVID-19 cases keep increasing. Abayomi stated this while addressing a press briefing in Ikeja on Friday. Lagos currently has the highest number of COVID-19 cases in Nigeria with 5,663. The state recorded its highest daily toll with 378 new cases between May 30 and June 4, reaching a total of 1,165 within that time frame. “If we carry on with the rate of positive testing that we are obtaining, we’re going to run out of isolation beds in our established isolation facilities. “Therefore, we are projecting. If we keep getting 150, 200 positives everyday, in another two or three weeks, even though we’re opening new isolation centres all the time, in time, we’re going to run out of beds. “And this has happened all over the world; it’s not just in Lagos or Nigeria. Every other country has reached the same tipping point where you now have to transition from managing pa

Seven toxic ingredients to watch out for in makeup, skincare products

Image
Everyone loves to look and feel good, and for this reason, we invest a lot of money in beauty products. The downside, however, is there are a lot of chemicals in these products you may not be aware of that are actually harmful to your skin and health. The government isn’t very strict with regulating cosmetic products and for this reason, there is very little to no pre-product approval before a product hits the market and enters your home. A minuscule approval process exists, but only for colour additives and ingredients classified as over-the-counter drugs. Many of these synthetic chemicals are skin irritants, skin penetrators, endocrine disrupters and are carcinogenic, in other words, very harmful and should be totally avoided. Always be on the lookout when you see the following ingredients and avoid products that have them. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) This can be found in shampoo, body wash, foundation, face wash, mouthwash, and toothpaste. SLS has been shown to cause or contribute t

BUNDESLIGA: Bayern battle Leverkusen live on StarTimes

Parading an array of top players, Bayern Munich’s clash with Leverkusen, headlines this weekend’s lineup of Bundesliga matches holding this weekend across German venues. And Africa’s pay television network, StarTimes, has concluded plans to air all the games live for the enjoyment of football fans across the African continent. The Bundesliga league no longer seems to be a one-horse race. Bayern cannot afford to drop points and they need their best players to get the better of tough customers, Bayer Leverkusen. After winning in Dortmund and following that up with a comfortable 5-0 victory against struggling Düsseldorf at the weekend, Bayern München are marching towards an eighth successive title. Bayer Leverkusen coach, Peter Bosz’s side, have been blowing hot and cold since the restart of the season, winning their first match 4-1 at Werder Bremen and 3-1 at Borussia Mönchengladbach, but then crashing spectacularly at home against Wolfsburg before finding back to their winning ways at F

Justice for Sekinat, Tina, Uwa is hope for the girl-child

Image
Three girls, Sekinat Agbelade aged 15; Tina Ezekwe, 16, and Vera Uwaila, 22, must be sharing a thing in common — pity for the Nigerian girl-child. If her father is not exorcising his demons by toying with her sexual organs, a man is taking advantage of her outside. And then the system fails her, as it did Sekinat, Tina and Vera. On March 20, men of the Nigerian Customs Service, NCS, ended Sekinat’s life in Ogun State. On May 26, policemen re-enacted the same abilities in Lagos. This time it was Tina. Both girls were preparing for the final exams as secondary school students. Then some killer-Customs officers and policemen in training, raped and then bashed in Vera’s face in Benin, Edo State, on May 27. And then, up North in Zamfara State, 11 men found sexual release in a 12-year-old girl. Whether to wonder how full-grown adults find the space to bury their phalluses or what exactly happens in their brains when the rape victims cry “NO” is a dilemma for all the Sekinas, Tinas and Uwas w
