WAEC reacts to Nigeria’s embargo on WASSCE

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has reacted to the abrupt U-turn made by the federal government on the resumption of schools across the country, and its earlier announcement of dates for the commencement of the 2020 May/June diet of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). The regional examination body said it is within the legitimate power of governments of the five-member countries to make such decisions. In an exclusive telephone interview with  PREMIUM TIMES , the WAEC’s Head of Nigeria’s Office (HNO), Patrick Areghan, said the examination body was still reviewing the situation and that it would make its position known soon. Mr Areghan, who came into office in March 2020, was supposed to oversee the May/June 2020 examination, the first national examination under his watch until the coronavirus pandemic struck, forcing the indefinite postponement of the examination. Oyo inaugurates tertiary institutions’ governing councils

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has constituted the governing councils of tertiary institutions owned by the state as well as that of the waste management board. The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Taiwo Adisa, made this known in a statement on Tuesday. The statement named the governing councils members for The Polytechnic, Ibadan; Oke Ogun Polytechnic; Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa; and the Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo, among others. According to Adisa, Mr Seun Adelore will continue to chair the board of the state’s Waste Management Agency. Other members of the board are Mr Johnson Ojebiyi, Mr Azeez Adeoti, Apostle Moses Lamunyegun, Mr Salawudeen Abiola, Ayuba Akinsola, Mr Lukman Adesina, Mr Isiaka Aliu, Mrs Bola Oguntona, Mr Yusuf Sarafa and Mr Shuaibu Oladayo. Abubakar Malami said this in a statement released by his Spokesman, Umar Gwandu, on Friday.  Ibrahim Magu Abubakar Malami, the Attorney-General of the Federation, (SAN), says the President, Muhammadu Buhari, has approved the suspension of the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, The PUNCH reports. Malami said this in a statement by his Spokesman,  Umar Gwandu, on Friday. He subsequently appointed the EFCC Head of Operations, Mohammed Umar, as the acting chairman. The statement read in part,  “President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the immediate suspension of Ibrahim Magu as Ag. COVID-19: UK Govt Reveals When Visa Applications Will Resume In Nigeria

The British High Commission made the statement on Thursday on when visa applications will resume in Nigeria.  The British High Commission in Nigeria has said visa applications will resume soon, Daily Post reports. In a statement on Thursday, the Commission explained that Nigerians hoping to visit the UK could do so once international flights resume. The statement read in part: “UK visa application centres are reopening in phased manner globally when it is safe to do so and when we can operate an effective service. “TSL contact are putting appropriate measures in place and working hard to reopen in Nigeria. We will share details of when VACs will reopen soon.” The airspace was shut in the country to domestic and international flights in March, in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19. However, with the resumption of domestic flights on Wednesday, there is optimism that international flights will resume soon.
