WHO: Africa’s coronavirus death toll tops 6,200

Africa has recorded over 6,200 deaths due to complications arising from COVID-19. According to the latest number released by the World Health Organization, WHO, regional office for Africa in Brazzaville, Congo, there are 6,218 deaths recorded on the continent. Africa has also recorded over 230,000 COVID-19 cases and 105,000 recoveries in 54 countries. Africa has recorded over 6,200 deaths due to complications arising from COVID-19. According to the latest number released by the World Health Organization, WHO, regional office for Africa in Brazzaville, Congo, there are 6,218 deaths recorded on the continent. As of Sunday morning, Nigeria has recorded 399 reported deaths, fifth-highest on the continent. South Africa is now ahead of Egypt, with 1,423 deaths, the highest on the continent, while the North African nation has 1,422 deaths. Algeria has 760 reported deaths, while Sudan has 433 deaths. Kano relaxes lockdown restriction on Mondays

Kano State governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has relaxed the restriction placed on Monday as a lockdown day in the state A statement signed on Sunday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Malan Abba Anwar, said the additional day means that Kano State has a total of four free days (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday) as opposed to three free days that were previously approved. The statement added that the policy decision was to further cushion the effect and hardship caused by lockdown in the state as a result of the outbreak of COVID-19 in the state. “People are now free to move freely on Mondays within the stipulated time of 6am-6pm” said the statement. The governor urged the people to continue to wear their face masks, to maintain social distancing, use their hand sanitizer and wash their hand with soap and running water. Police arrest suspect linked with murder of postgraduate student in Ibadan

The Police Command in Oyo State says it has arrested a suspect linked with the murder of Azeezat Somuyiwa, on June 5 in Ibadan. DAILY POST had reported that Somuyiwa, a pregnant woman, was murdered in her apartment at Aba Ijefun, Akinyele area, by yet-to-be-identified persons. The state’s Police Public Relations Officers (PPRO), Olugbenga Fadeyi, who  confirmed the incident , said an investigation into the incident had commenced. However, Fadeyi, on Thursday disclosed that a suspect linked to the murder has been arrested. ” A suspect has been arrested with respect to Somuyiwa’s murder and we are currently on that of Bello. ” The police are intensifying efforts to arrest other suspects linked with both incidents,” Fadeyi said. Fire burns three children in Awka

Three children of same parents, Mr and Mrs Michael Anor were on Saturday night burnt in a fire incident that happened in Awka, Anambra State. DAILY POST learnt that the fire which broke out in a residential building started in one of the flats after a can of kerosene that was at the back of a refrigerator exploded. The fire caught the three children who were in the flat, but they were eventually rescued with varying degrees of injury by fire-fighters who put off the fire after they were alerted by neighbours. Meanwhile, it was gathered that one of the children died on Sunday morning from the wound sustained from the fire, while the other two have been transferred to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Awka for treatment. A 21-year-old female student of Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki, Oyo State, Grace Oshiagwu, has been macheted to death by unknown assailant(s) in Akinyele Local Government Area of the state. SP Olugbenga Fadeyi, the Oyo State Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday in Ibadan. Fadeyi said that the deceased was macheted on the head in a church building in Idi-ori area of Shasha, off Expressway, by unknown assailant at about 3 p.m. on Saturday. The PPRO said that investigation into the death of the 21-year-old Oshiagwu had begun and the police tactical teams were on the trail of the assailant(s). “While efforts have been intensified, we want to solicit for credible information from members of the communities around the area and the general public, to enable us to unravel the misery behind these dastard killings,” Fadeyi said. He said that the corpse of the deceased had been deposited at Adeoyo State Hospital, Ring Road, Ibadan, for autopsy.

The young lady's body was found in a church mission building at Idi-Ori Area, Shasha off expressway.    Grace Oshiagwu Premium Times reports that a student identified as Grace Oshiagwu has been reportedly r*ped and killed in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, the third in the state in two weeks. Her body was found inside a church mission building. The deceased, 21, was a National Diploma student of The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki. The incident was confirmed by residents of the area and the police who only confirmed her murder. The attack on Ms Oshiagwu happened on Saturday at Idi-ori Area, off Shasha Expressway, Akinyele Local Government Area in Ibadan. A resident of the area who asked not to be named for security reasons spoke on how the victim’s body was found. “It was evident enough that she was r*ped. COVID-19: Oyo discharges 95 patients

Oyo State government has discharged 95 coronavirus patients after they received their second negative test results. Governor, Seyi Makinde disclosed this, yesterday, in a series of tweets. According to him, this brought the number of discharged cases in the state to 271. “Ninety-five confirmed COVID-19 cases have received their second negative test results and have been discharged. This brings the number of discharged cases in Oyo State to 271,” Makinde said. The Governor, who is also the head of state’s COVID-19 Taskforce, also announced that COVID-19 confirmation tests for 35 suspected cases came back positive. The cases were from the following areas: Ido (7), Ibadan Southwest (5), Ibadan North (5I), Ibadan Northwest (5), Oluyole (3), Ibadan Northeast (3), Ibadan Southeast (3), Egbeda (3) and Ogbomosho North (1) local councils. Jihadists linked to the Islamic State group killed six people Saturday in an assault on Monguno, a strategic garrison town in Borno, security sources and residents said. Dozens of fighters believed to be from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) faction clashed with soldiers and members of a government-backed militia after attacking Monguno near Lake Chad. “Two soldiers, a member of a local self-defence group and three civilians were killed in the attack which lasted two hours,” anti-jihadist militia fighter Bukar Ari told AFP. The attackers stormed into the town from two directions, firing heavy guns and rocket-propelled grenades as they overran several troop positions, residents said.
