Nigerian naira slides to 3-year low on black market after oil price crash

The Nigerian naira fell to its lowest level against the dollar in three years on the black market on Tuesday, traders said, a day after a historic oil price rout pushed U.S. crude futures below zero. The naira touched 420 per dollar on the black market, for the first time since February 2017, 14% weaker than the official market rate. The currency has been hitting new lows on the over-the-counter spot and black markets on thin volumes since last month after the central bank adjusted the naira’s official rate, implying a 15% devaluation. It was quoted at a low of 388.92 on the spot market on Tuesday. A lockdown of Nigeria’s main cities this month to stop the spread of the coronavirus has slowed activities in the economy and the currency market particularly with the central bank running scanty operations and traders working from home. Eight suspects arrested in South Africa’s ‘biggest bank robbery’ fraud case

South African authorities have apprehended eight people suspected of illegally siphoning 2.3 billion rand ($133.87 million) from small lender VBS Mutual Bank, which collapsed in 2018 because of the corruption scandal. Godfrey Lebeya, head of South Africa’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, said four were already in custody, three were due to turn themselves in on Thursday and an eighth suspect had agreed to appear after clearing COVID-19 quarantine. “As soon as all the relevant processes are completed, we will be securing the attendance of the eight suspects in court,” he told a news conference. The head of the National Prosecuting Authority Shamila Batohi added that they were due to appear in court on Thursday. She described it as “probably the biggest bank robbery in this country.” Batohi added, “We have an obligation to all South Africans to deliver justice in this matter … It is our duty to the direct victims of corruption.” Charges included five counts of racketeering,

Allowance Increment: Graduates falsifying age to qualify for NYSC – Director-General

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) says graduates are falsifying their age to qualify for service under the scheme and benefit from the increment in the monthly allowance of corps members. The Director-General of the corps, Shuaibu Ibrahim, said this on Tuesday at the 2020 Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board virtual policy meeting. “Following the allowance increment, people are now doctoring their ages so they can come to serve two or three times because of the allowances.” He said the corps would be partnering with JAMB to eradicate age falsification by graduating students. “Mr Oloyede is a man of honour and I am learning to implement some of the innovation he has brought to JAMB in NYSC,” he said. He said the JAMB registrar, Ishaq Oloyede, has turned the board around for good and the NYSC will like to work with JAMB to solve the problem of ghost corp members too. Kaduna Govt Converts NYSC Camp To Quarantine Centre

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp located along the Abuja- Kaduna highway has been turned into a quarantine centre by the  Kaduna State Government . On Thursday, the state deputy governor, Hadiza Balarabe, confirmed this during an inspection visit to the facility along with members of the COVID-19 Task Force in Kaduna. The deputy Governor while inspecting the facility expressed that it would be used to quarantine travellers coming into the state during the lockdown. Balarabe warned unauthorised persons coming into Kaduna during the lockdown to better turn back or get ready to be quarantined at the NYSC camp for 14 days to ascertain their COVID-19 status. She further explained that similar quarantine facilities have been set up at all the 17 entry points into the state. Suspend NYSC Camps For 2 years, Osinbajo Committee Advises FG

Yemi Osinbajo The Economic Sustainability Committee (ESC) led by Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo has urged the federal government to consider suspending the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC ) orientation camp exercises for two years This recommendation was contained in its report presented to President Muhammadu Buhari last week. “The immediate focus in the Education sector is to address the disruptions caused by the pandemic and ensuing social distancing measures at all levels of education,” the report read. “Practical steps will be taken to minimise disruption to learning, utilising technology as appropriate. Specifically, virtual learning will be implemented (either online or through broadcast), virtual convocation ceremonies or issuance of certificates (with postponed ceremonies) should be implemented to continue educational progression. “In similar context, consideration will be given to suspending the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp Exercises for at least 24
