Justice for Uwa is victory for all women

Image
Once again, the death of the 22-year-old Nigerian university student Vera Uwalia Omozuwa has shifted the discussion about rape to the forefront. Uwa died on Saturday, May 30, three few days after being  physically and sexually assaulted by unknown individuals. According to reports, the student had gone to a quiet church near her residence to study. Unfortunately, a place that was supposed to be a sanctuary for all, was where the activities that led to Uwa’s attack and death in the hands of low life criminals started. Her death is another number in the statistics of Nigerian women sexually attacked and killed. Unfortunately, a death as gruesome as Uwa’s has to take place for us to initiate another discussion on rape and sexual assaults. It is saddening that a subject that should be an everyday discussion on the lips of all Nigerians is only brought up after avoidable incidents. Rape and sexual assaults remain everyday crimes in Nigeria, yet, it is the least discussed in the country....

He talks to ALEXANDER OKERE about the spate of rape in Nigeria and ways to help the victims and their families overcome the impact. Rape has been given different definitions. What should Nigerians understand about it in simple terms? Rape is a forced sexual contact with someone who does not or cannot consent. It is forcing sex on someone who does not want it, is intoxicated or not legally old enough to give consent. For such, we count as rape. It is regardless of gender, but when we talk about rape, the female gender is more commonly referred to. Some people think it is a mentally ill person that will carry out sexual assault. But research actually shows that most rapists do not have mental disorder. Of course, there are people...

4 Ways to protect your self from Rape

Image
This week, there was an exchange of views on rape cases that are becoming increasingly common in Nigeria especially in the case of women and children being raped. A 22-year-old university student is suspected of being raped in a church near Benin University in Edo state, also on Monday, the Jigawa state police in northern Nigeria confirmed the arrest of 11 men for raping a 12-year-old girl, another man, 18-year-old Barakat Bello, was raped in the southwestern state of Oyo. So what are the steps woman should take to protect herself from the men trying to rape her? 1.Knowing that rape can happen It happens and does not choose who will happen to it. Because if you have this knowledge, you might remember it may have happened before it happened, you can protect yourself. Just like when you are at a party, you should pay attention to what you eat and watch what you eat at the reception or what water you drink, because in places like this one can put something into your diet or drink. For you...

Causes of Rape All Ladies Should Know and Avoid

Image
Rape can be defined as the crime of forcing someone (either a male or a female) to have sex with you when they do not want to by threatening them or making use of violence. Sometimes rape does not really have to be with violence but without consent of the victim. Husband can also rape his wife if he goes into her by force or without her consent. A boy can also be raped by a girl or some group of girls; although this is very rare in our society.   In the Federal Republic of Nigeria, rape is a crime punishable by the law. Yet, some people still go into this crime despising the law. The good news is that when offenders of this law are apprehended, they will have no other choice than to face the law. In our society, women are victims of rape more than the men because they are weaker vessels and can be over powered by the men. This is very wrong and has put the female child in panic. Rape can be avoided if we take all preventive measures which will be made known to you as you read ...

Schools Resumption Day.

Image
The federal government has not stipulated a day for the reopening of schools in Nigeria, the teachers have been in their houses teaching digitally. Government school teachers are paid while the private schools aren't paid. This is an awakening for teachers to have another source of income. A small scale enterprise would have benefited teachers doing this lockdown. The government is being indifferent about this particular issue. Teachers should garner things that will help them secure money during the lockdown. With no specified date of resumption, the teachers and their families will hope and pray that things should go back to the way it uses to be. Skills that can help teachers to earn money. 1.Extra home coaching: Some parents might want to keep their kids busy after their classes online if such a case is presented, teachers can get such parent pay for extra home coaching online. 2.Digital Marketing: With no or little capital businesses can be set up digitally. This is the use of...

Image
All vice Chancellors and school proprietors should take note of this about what should be done on school fees reduction as school resumes. Considering how the outbreak of Covid-19 has hampered the progress of different sectors in the country this year, there is no doubt that there will be changes in the activities of these sectors as Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had earlier said that the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic have presented an unprecedented opportunity for Nigeria to reset critical sectors of its economy. The educational sector should undergo changes that will be favourable for both members of the staff and students. Enforcement of School fees Reduction should be considered as school resumes. This is because the whole population is facing a drop in income earnings as a result of how Covid-19 has affected Nigerian economy. As the Federal government lifted lockdown for over three months, many have been at home without any source of income. How then will they cope with...
