Democracy Day: Buhari’s speech mere rhetoric, apathetic and promissory note – PANDEF

The Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, the apex socio-cultural body of the Niger Delta people, has described President Muhammadu Buhari’s Democracy Day address, to the nation, as rhetoric, apathetic, and largely, a promissory note. In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Robinson and obtained by DAILY POST on Friday, PANDEF said it had expected to hear commitment from Mr. President on the Amendment of the 2010 Electoral Act, which he withheld assent in 2019; particularly, with off-season Gubernatorial Elections around the corner. The group, which rated the address low said after 21 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, the least President Buhari should bequeath to Nigeria, is an Amended Electoral Act that would strengthen the Nation’s Electoral process, and guarantee credible, free and fair elections, Unfortunately, nothing of such was in his address. COVID-19: Ganduje reopens viewing centres in Kano as LaLiga resumes

Following the resumption of LaLiga in Spain and other leagues across Europe amid partial lockdown in Kano State, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has directed for the re-opening of all viewing centres in the state. He, however, directed them to observe all protocols enunciated by health workers. He made this known when the leadership of Soccer Viewing Centres Association, Kano State, paid him a courtesy call in his office, Friday, urging for ease of the lockdown order for the centres. He equally donated 40,000 face masks for the distribution in their viewing centres, so as to strengthen observance of the laid down protocols. “It is in line with our decision to see that our economy bounces back, through reinvigorating commercial and other business activities in the state, that I have directed all viewing centres to be re-opened from today,” he said. Police: Why we granted Bobrisky bail over ‘N30 million fraud’

The Nigeria Police Force says it granted cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, bail because it is “mindful of the people” it takes into custody. Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, told newsmen that Bobrisky was arrested in connection to a N30m fraud, adding that the matter was under investigation. Mba said, “He (Bobrisky) was arrested, but he has been granted bail; he is no longer in our custody but he is still under investigation. He was arrested on the allegation by a businesswoman that he fraudulently collected N30m from her. “We had to grant him bail because of the lockdown and we are also mindful of the people we take into custody but the case is still under investigation.” share this story with friends

Bobrisky arrested over ‘N30 million fraud’

Police detectives from Abuja, on Thursday, arrested cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, over an alleged N30m fraud. It was gathered that Bobrisky was arrested at the Lekki area of Lagos State. Newsmen learnt that a yet-to-be-identified businesswoman petitioned the police and alleged that Bobrisky fraudulently collected the sum of N30m from her. It was learnt that Bobrisky was later granted an administrative bail. The Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, who confirmed the arrest, stated that the matter was under investigation. Student hacked to death in Nasarawa

A student, Yusuf Isah Adi, has been hacked to death with a cutlass in Ugah area of Lafia, Nasarawa State. A community leader, Musa Saidu, told our reporter on Thursday that the late Adi was attacked when he was sleeping by one Rabiu Musa Omiya. Saidu alleged that Omiya hit Adi with a cutlass on his head and also injured Adi’s younger brother during the attack. He said, while the younger brother of Adi is still receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital, the late Adi lost too much blood and died. Before his death, Yusuf was a student with the College of Health Science and Technology, Keffi, Nasarawa State. Saidu said that the assailant is, however, on the run, but the incident has been reported to the Police “C” Division. According to him: “Police Special Anti Robbery Squad, (SARS) came and arrested two people in Ugah town and left.” The spokesman of the police in the state, ASP Ramhan Nansel, confirmed the incident and said that they were still trying to apprehend the suspect share

COVID-19: List of countries with highest coronavirus deaths in Africa

Africa has recorded over 5,800 deaths due to complications arising from COVID-19. According to the latest numbers released by the World Health Organization, WHO, regional office for Africa in Brazzaville, Congo, there are 5,801 deaths recorded in the continent. Africa has also recorded over 215,000 COVID-19 cases and 98,000 recoveries in 54 countries. As of Friday, Egypt has 1,342 reported deaths, the highest on the continent, followed by South Africa with 1,284 fatalities and Algeria with 741 deaths. Other countries are Sudan (401 deaths), Nigeria (387 deaths), Cameroon (215 deaths), Morocco (211 deaths), Mali (97 deaths), DR Congo (97 deaths), Kenya (92 deaths), Somalia (85 deaths), Chad (72 deaths), Mauritania (71 deaths), and Niger (65 deaths). Man arrested for defiling 3yr old girl

By Evelyn Usman A 23-year-old man, old Badmus Quadri, has been arrested for defiling one of his neighbours three-old child in Owode community,  Ogun State. The child’s mother, went to the market, leaving her in her siblings’ care on Thursday. However, on arrival, she noticed blood in her vagina and upon interrogation, her child mentioned the suspect’s name and describes how he allegedly defiled her in his room. The distraught mother reported the matter at the  Owode Egbado Police division. MKO ABIOLA The Abiola family of Abeokuta in Ogun on Friday demanded for an official recognition of late chief M.K.O Abiola as an ex-president of Nigeria. The Head of the Family, Chief Olanrewaju Abiola, made the demand at their family house in Abeokuta. The late M.K.O Abiola was believed to have won the June 12, 1993 presidential elections. Abiola said the recognition had become necessary for Nigerian leaders to rule in peace. He commended Buhari for conferring a posthumous highest national honour of the Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (GCFR) on Late Abiola and recognising June 12 as Nigeria’s authentic Democracy Day. He, however, urged the president to actualise the mandate that Nigerians gave to his late junior brother, Moshood, on June 12, 1993, by conferring an official status of an ex-president of the nation on him. The police command in Benue on Thursday presented a suspected rapist, who allegedly dragged a seven-year-old child into a church hall and had carnal knowledge of her. This is coming days after Uwavera Omozuwa, a 100-level Microbiology student of the University of Benin, was allegedly raped and killed by yet-to-be-identified persons at the Ikpoba Hill branch of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Benin, while reading in the church. The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, has ordered the deployment of additional detectives to Edo State to support the police command there to unravel the brutal killing of Miss Vera Uwaila Omosuwa in Benin. Govs declare state of emergency on rape

The decision, taken at the 10th COVID-19 teleconference meeting of the forum, is coming amid rising cases of rape across the country. In a communique issued at the end of the meeting, the governors condemned sexual and gender-based violence, saying they were committed to ensuring justice was served. It also called on its members yet to implement laws against sexual and gender-based violence to do so in order to reduce the spate of rape in the country.
