6 Reasons Why FG Should Allow Students To Write WAEC This Year (OPINION)
The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu had on Wednesday said that schools in Nigeria will remain close until the safety of Nigerian students are guaranteed. This decison came after the West African Examination Council (W.A.E.C) said the examination will still hold this year and Ghana have already released their examination timetable.
But the truth is that if this year ends, it will lead to a drawback in the educational sector in Nigeria and below are the reasons why students should be allowed to write WAEC this year.
1. They have paid for enrollment fee: This payment was done a month before the COVID-19 lockdown and the truth of the matter is that if the examination is not written this year, it will lead to chaos in the various schools where they registered as the school owners may not have the money for refund.
2. If this year passes, then every student will have to repeat their current session in 2021 which is would cause a delay.
3. To prevent students from dropping out of school: As it is now, most students are tired already and for the unserious ones, they might use this as a means to drop out of school.
4. To reduce the number of nuisance in the society.
5. To prevent alterations in academic activities.
6. To prevent influence from peer groups.
It is worthy of note that even if Nigeria decides to write only the National Examination Council (NECO), it is not as effective as writing WAEC because the former can be used only in Nigeria, while the latter can be used in other countries.
The fact that these students have already paid for enrollment fee is a more reason why the examination should hold this year.
