WHO: Africa’s coronavirus death toll tops 6,200

Africa has recorded over 6,200 deaths due to complications arising from COVID-19. According to the latest number released by the World Health Organization, WHO, regional office for Africa in Brazzaville, Congo, there are 6,218 deaths recorded on the continent. Africa has also recorded over 230,000 COVID-19 cases and 105,000 recoveries in 54 countries. Africa has recorded over 6,200 deaths due to complications arising from COVID-19. As of Sunday morning, Nigeria has recorded 399 reported deaths, fifth-highest on the continent. Kano relaxes lockdown restriction on Mondays

Kano State governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has relaxed the restriction placed on Monday as a lockdown day in the state A statement signed on Sunday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Malan Abba Anwar, said the additional day means that Kano State has a total of four free days (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday) as opposed to three free days that were previously approved. The statement added that the policy decision was to further cushion the effect and hardship caused by lockdown in the state as a result of the outbreak of COVID-19 in the state. “People are now free to move freely on Mondays within the stipulated time of 6am-6pm” said the statement. The governor urged the people to continue to wear their face masks, to maintain social distancing, use their hand sanitizer and wash their hand with soap and running water. Police arrest suspect linked with murder of postgraduate student in Ibadan

The Police Command in Oyo State says it has arrested a suspect linked with the murder of Azeezat Somuyiwa, on June 5 in Ibadan. DAILY POST had reported that Somuyiwa, a pregnant woman, was murdered in her apartment at Aba Ijefun, Akinyele area, by yet-to-be-identified persons. The state’s Police Public Relations Officers (PPRO), Olugbenga Fadeyi, who  confirmed the incident , said an investigation into the incident had commenced. However, Fadeyi, on Thursday disclosed that a suspect linked to the murder has been arrested. ” A suspect has been arrested with respect to Somuyiwa’s murder and we are currently on that of Bello. ” The police are intensifying efforts to arrest other suspects linked with both incidents,” Fadeyi said. Fire burns three children in Awka

Three children of same parents, Mr and Mrs Michael Anor were on Saturday night burnt in a fire incident that happened in Awka, Anambra State. DAILY POST learnt that the fire which broke out in a residential building started in one of the flats after a can of kerosene that was at the back of a refrigerator exploded. The fire caught the three children who were in the flat, but they were eventually rescued with varying degrees of injury by fire-fighters who put off the fire after they were alerted by neighbours. Meanwhile, it was gathered that one of the children died on Sunday morning from the wound sustained from the fire, while the other two have been transferred to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Awka for treatment.
